When American Horror Story: Hotel introduced John Lowe, we were a little confused by him. In a world full of monsters, he seemed like a normal guy. A nice, normal guy. Therefore, we did not understand why everyone at the Cortez hotel seemed so repulsed by him. Ryan Murphy doesn’t create simple, nice guys, especially in the American Horror Story world. We expected more of his dark layers to uncoil soon on Hotel.
“Devil’s Night” made all the complex John Lowe pieces start to fall into place. He is the Ten Commandments Killer. Mr. March invited John to his Devil’s Night dinner, with a bunch of infamous serial killers. It made no sense at first, until you realize that John is one of them. March makes a few key comments that alerted us to this twist, such as him saying that he thought John would enjoy the killing with his line of work.
This was the biggest giveaway. March also said that he thought John was one of them. However, he dismissed John when he wasn’t ready to accept the killers and join them. Last week, Sally scolded John for losing his memory about them sleeping together.
She said he remembered doing it but chose to suppress it. This was another huge clue to John being the Ten Commandments serial killer. In another scene, John also had a very interesting encounter with his boss, who said he had a psych evaluation five years ago. This showed that John is more mentally unhinged than he originally seemed on Hotel.
All these clues point to John being the Ten Commandments killer but choosing to block out his evil ways. This would explain why the serial killer seemed so obsessed with John, and how the figure almost seems like a ghost, knowing way too much about him and his every whereabouts all the time. He seemed more like John’s shadow than an actual person.
